The Intel Xeon E5-2690 v4 is a 14-core, 28-thread Broadwell-EP processor with a 2.6 GHz base clock, turbo up to 3.5 GHz, 35 MB of L3 cache and a 135 W TDP for the LGA 2011-3 socket. It supports four channels of DDR4-2400 up to 1.5 TB per socket, 40 lanes of PCIe 3.0 and two QPI links at 9.6 GT/s. Broadwell was the last and most mature E5 generation, and the 2690 v4 is its highest-clocked 14-core SKU, so it is the natural end-of-life upgrade for any v3-era server after a BIOS update. It shipped in Dell PowerEdge R630 and R730, HPE ProLiant DL360 and DL380 Gen9, Lenovo System x3650 M5 and Supermicro X10 systems.

The installed base of Gen9 and 13G servers remains large in the CIS, Africa and South Asia, and replacing eight- or ten-core v3 processors with 2690 v4s doubles the core count of a two-socket server without touching the chassis, memory or storage. That makes the SKU popular with hosting providers extending the life of older fleets, with integrators building budget servers from refurbished chassis, and with universities and training centres. Does the E5-2690 v4 work in a server that shipped with v3 processors?

Yes. Broadwell-EP uses the same LGA 2011-3 socket and C610 chipset. Update the BIOS to a version that lists v4 support before installing; Dell, HPE and Lenovo all published such updates for their v3-era models.

Is a pulled processor the same as a refurbished one?
