Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC580 24TB SATA Data Centre Hard Drive

The Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC580 24 TB (WUH722424ALE6L4) is a 3.5-inch helium-filled data-centre hard drive with a SATA 6 Gb/s interface, 7200 RPM spindle and 512 MB cache, built on ten CMR platters. It combines OptiNAND, energy-assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) and a triple-stage actuator to reach 24 TB, and ArmorCache gives write-cache-enabled performance together with power-loss protection. Western Digital rates it at up to 298 MB/s sustained transfer, 550 TB per year workload and a projected 2.5 million hours MTBF, with a five-year limited warranty. The 6L4 suffix denotes 512e sector format and standard (SE) security; SED and 4Kn variants carry other suffixes.

HC580 competes directly with the Seagate Exos X24 for hyperscale, enterprise and cloud bulk storage, and many operators dual-source the two to avoid single-vendor exposure. Backup vendors, surveillance integrators and scale-out NAS builders order it for 24-, 60- and 102-bay enclosures. The drive is also sold with a 12 Gb/s SAS interface. Check that your RAID controller and enclosure firmware list 24 TB support, since some older HBAs cap at 16 or 20 TB, and match the sector format to your operating system.
