800G optics supply: what Lumentum's numbers say about lead times

Lumentum's results from November 2025 to August 2026 show laser supply running well behind demand, with capacity booked through 2027. What that means for buyers of 800G transceivers.

On 4 November 2025 Lumentum reported revenue of $533.8 million for its fiscal first quarter, up 58 per cent year on year, and said its cloud transceiver business should now be 'on a sustainable upward path'. The figures matter to network buyers because Lumentum is one of the main suppliers of the indium phosphide EML lasers used in 800G and 1.6T transceivers, and its disclosures are one of the few public windows into how tight that supply really is.

The picture became clearer on 3 February 2026. On the fiscal second-quarter call, chief executive Michael Hurlston said the company was under-shipping customer demand for EML lasers by around 30 per cent, roughly the same gap as the previous quarter, and that all EML capacity was committed under long-term agreements running through the end of calendar 2027. Lumentum had front-loaded a planned 40 per cent expansion of indium phosphide capacity at Sagamihara in Japan and expected further capacity from the second half of 2026 into early 2027.

From 800G to 1.6T

Hurlston also said 1.6T demand was 'definitely stronger' than the company had expected 90 days earlier, while 800G volumes were also ahead of plan. Dell'Oro Group's first-quarter 2026 data, published on 2 June 2026, confirmed that 800 Gbps switches made up the vast majority of Ethernet switch shipments in AI back-end networks and that 1.6T switches had begun sampling, with a ramp projected for the second half of 2026. By 11 August 2026 Lumentum was reporting quarterly revenue of $1.01 billion, up 109 per cent year on year, and guiding to $1.225–1.275 billion for the following quarter, citing 1.6T adoption and demand for high-power lasers for co-packaged optics.

None of this is a price list, and Lumentum does not publish transceiver prices. What the disclosures establish is that laser supply, not module assembly, is the binding constraint; that hyperscaler long-term agreements have claimed the available capacity into 2027; and that the mix is shifting towards 1.6T, which competes for the same lasers and DSP wafer capacity as 800G.

What it means for buyers

Enterprise and carrier buyers outside the hyperscale tier should treat 800G optics as a long-lead item and plan it separately from switch procurement. Specify the exact module type (DR8, 2xFR4, 2xDR4, ZR or ZR+), the form factor (OSFP or QSFP-DD) and the switch vendor's compatibility requirements, and ask suppliers to state lead time and allocation status in writing rather than relying on catalogue availability. Where a project can run on 400G today with an 800G-ready switch, that remains the lower-risk path. InTechnologies can quote 400G and 800G optics from OEM and compatible sources with current lead times.
