Samsung announced on 8 July 2026 that it had begun mass production of the PM1763, its first PCIe 6.0 enterprise SSD, aimed at AI and HPC servers and validated for Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform. The drive was first shown at Nvidia’s GTC in March alongside Samsung’s HBM4 and SOCAMM2 modules. It pairs Samsung’s ninth-generation V-NAND with a newly developed 4nm controller.
Samsung’s figures for the 16TB configuration are up to 28,400 MB/s sequential read and 21,900 MB/s sequential write, which the company says is more than double its PCIe 5.0 predecessor, the PM1753; a 40GB model file transfers in about 1.4 seconds at that rate. Igor’s Lab reports random performance of up to 6.8 million read IOPS and 950,000 write IOPS, capacities of 4TB, 8TB and 16TB, and 2.5-inch, E1.S and E3.S form factors. Samsung claims power efficiency improved by more than 1.8 times over the previous generation, and the drive is designed for direct-to-chip liquid cooling. Security features include post-quantum cryptography algorithms and TDISP support for virtualised environments.
What it means for the PCIe 5.0 and 4.0 lines
The PM1763 does not replace anything most buyers in our markets are deploying today. PCIe 6.0 host platforms are confined to the newest AI servers, and the drive is being produced for Vera Rubin systems first. The practical consequence falls on the existing lines: the PM1753 (PCIe 5.0) becomes the mainstream performance drive, while the PM1743, Samsung’s original PCIe 5.0 enterprise SSD in 2.5-inch and E3.S, and the PCIe 4.0 PM9A3 continue as the volume parts for general-purpose servers. Samsung’s enterprise product pages list the PM1753 at up to 14,500 MB/s sequential read and the PM1743 at up to 14,000 MB/s.
Two cautions. First, the headline figures are vendor specifications for the largest capacity; smaller capacities and the E1.S variant will be lower, as with every drive family, so ask for the product brief of the exact part number. Second, a PCIe 6.0 drive in a PCIe 5.0 slot runs at PCIe 5.0 rates, so there is no benefit in specifying it for current Xeon or EPYC platforms even where it can be obtained.
What it means for buyers
For 2026 and 2027 server builds, keep specifying PM1743, PM1753 or PM9A3 by exact Samsung part number, and confirm the form factor against the chassis backplane before ordering. Samsung is directing its newest NAND towards the AI-focused lines, which may mean longer lead times for the older enterprise parts rather than price cuts. Ask for the firmware revision and the warranty start date on the quotation, and for confirmation that the drive is the OEM-neutral version if it will go into a Dell or HPE chassis with its own firmware requirements. InTechnologies carries Samsung PM9A3 and PM1743 drives and can check availability of the PM1753.
