Vision Pro M5 and Galaxy XR reset the premium headset tier
Apple’s M5 Vision Pro and Samsung’s $1,799 Galaxy XR arrived in the same week of October 2025. Since then Meta has raised Quest prices and PICO has pushed its Space Pro to late 2026.

Two premium headsets launched within days of each other in October 2025. Samsung’s Galaxy XR went on sale in the United States on 21 October at $1,799, the first device running Google’s Android XR. It uses a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, dual 3,552 by 3,840 micro-OLED panels at up to 90Hz, 16GB of RAM with 256GB of storage, eye and hand tracking, and a tethered battery rated for about two hours. The headset weighs 545g plus a 302g battery pack. Motion controllers are sold separately at $250, and at launch it was available only through Samsung’s own channels.
Apple’s updated Vision Pro, reviewed by 9to5Mac on 21 October ahead of its 22 October release, moves to the M5 chip and raises the display refresh rate to 120Hz. The more significant change for daily use is the Dual Knit Band, effectively two Solo Knit bands joined with a single adjustment dial and tungsten counterweights in the rear strap. Reviewers found it more comfortable but heavier overall, and the $3,499 starting price and limited application library remained the main objections.
Meta raises prices, PICO slips
Meta’s mass-market Quest line moved in the opposite direction on price. On 16 April 2026 Meta announced increases effective 19 April: the Quest 3S 128GB to $349.99, the 256GB model to $449.99 and the Quest 3 512GB to $599.99. The company said the cost of building high-performance VR hardware had “risen significantly”, pointing to a global rise in memory chip prices. Refurbished headsets took the same increase; accessories did not. Earlier, on 15 January, Meta had announced the end of sales of commercial Quest SKUs and Horizon managed services from 20 February 2026, with support for existing business customers running to 4 January 2030.
ByteDance’s PICO cancelled the 2 September 2026 Beijing reveal of its Space Pro, a micro-OLED headset with 4,000 pixels per inch and a dual-chip design, and moved the release to the fourth quarter of 2026, saying it wanted to present the device “in a more complete state”. The product is aimed mainly at China, with a global launch also planned.
The net effect over twelve months: the premium tier now has entrants at $1,799, at around $1,059 for Valve’s Steam Frame and at $3,499, while the volume tier has become more expensive rather than cheaper.
What it means for buyers
Quest 3S remains the volume product for Gulf and Central Asian retail, but orders placed after 19 April carry a higher base and there is no sign of a cheaper successor. Specify the storage variant and the regional power adapter, and check whether the distributor’s warranty covers the Meta account region your customers will use. Galaxy XR and the M5 Vision Pro are US-first products; both can be sourced for showroom and corporate demand, but buyers should assume US warranty terms, English-first software and controllers or prescription inserts as separate line items. Business customers who relied on Meta’s commercial SKUs will need consumer units from February 2026, which changes the paperwork but not the hardware. Keep MOQs small on anything above $1,500 until local sell-through is proven.
