Juniper PTX and 800G ZR/ZR+: what the reach figures really mean

On 19 March 2026 HPE Juniper Networking introduced the PTX10002-60MR, a 2RU fixed router with 14.4 Tbps of capacity, twelve 800GE QSFP-DD ports and forty-eight 100GE QSFP28 ports. It followed the larger launch reported on 27 February: the modular PTX12000 family, where the PTX12012 offers up to 648 ports of 800G and 518.4 Tbps from 54-port, 43.2 Tbps line cards, and the PTX12008 offers 345.6 Tbps in an 8-slot chassis. All of these run Junos OS Evolved on Express 5 silicon.

Juniper describes Express 5 as a chiplet-based ASIC family. In the PTX10002-60MR it forwards about 4.96 billion packets per second, roughly double Express 4, at about 0.05 W per Gbps, with MACsec at line rate on every port and a 16 GB deep buffer. Those are the properties operators look for in core, peering and data-centre interconnect roles, where traffic is bursty and links leave the building.

What the reach figures say

The main reason operators and AI builders shortlist these routers is that coherent ZR and ZR+ optics plug directly into router ports, so a DWDM wavelength can leave the router without a separate transponder shelf. On the PTX10002-60MR, Juniper states that ZR is supported on all 60 ports without restriction. Reach, however, depends heavily on optic type, line rate and whether the link is amplified, and the vendor's own figures should be read with their conditions attached.

For 800G ZR in QSFP-DD, the launch material quotes up to 72 km without amplification and up to 120 km with amplification; 400G ZR is listed at 80 to 128 km, and 100G ZR in QSFP28 at up to 120 km unamplified or 300 km amplified. Juniper's coherent optics guide, published on 31 March 2026, describes 800ZR (the OIF standard) and 800G OpenZR+ (the MSA extension) in the QSFP-DD800 form factor, and gives a nominal reach of 450 km at 800 Gbps, 900 km at 600 Gbps and 1,800 km at 400 Gbps over amplified line systems. Speed and reach are negotiated, so the same module trades capacity for distance. The guide also states that using these DWDM transceivers requires a Juniper Coherent Optics or Third-party Coherent Optics software licence.

For AI data-centre interconnect between campuses in the same metro, the shorter 800ZR figures are usually the relevant ones. For regional backbones, OpenZR+ at reduced line rates over an amplified line system is the more realistic design. Neither figure is a guaranteed maximum; the actual budget depends on fibre loss, amplifier spacing and OSNR.

What it means for buyers

Specify the optic by part and mode, not just by speed: 800ZR or 800G OpenZR+, target line rate, amplified or unamplified, and the span lengths and fibre type. Order the coherent optics licence with the router, because the optics will not be usable without it, and confirm platform and software support in Juniper's Hardware Compatibility Tool; the PTX10002-60MR ships with Junos EVO 26.2R1 and some features are scheduled for later releases. Coherent 800G modules draw on the same constrained laser and DSP supply as other 800G optics, so ask for lead times on routers and optics separately. InTechnologies can quote PTX platforms together with the matching coherent optics and licences.
