Steam Machine review: capable 1080p box priced like a premium PC

Valve announced the Steam Machine, the Steam Frame headset and a new Steam Controller on 12 November 2025 with an “early 2026” window and no prices. The window slipped. Pre-orders for the Steam Machine opened on 22 June 2026 and units shipped from 29 June: $1,050 for 512GB, $1,130 with a Steam Controller, $1,350 for 2TB and $1,430 for the 2TB bundle. Valve said its original price target was “no longer viable” because of component costs and used a randomised reservation queue to limit resellers. Launch regions were the US, Canada, UK, EU and Australia, with Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong served through the distributor Komodo.

What the hardware delivers

Inside is a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 processor with six cores at up to 4.8GHz and a 30W budget, an RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units at up to 2.45GHz and 110W, 16GB of DDR5 (upgradeable) plus 8GB of GDDR6, and a user-replaceable NVMe drive. Connectivity covers Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, gigabit Ethernet, DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0. The cube measures 156 by 162 by 152mm, weighs 2.6kg and carries a one-year warranty.

PCGamesN’s review, published on 7 July 2026, scored it 6/10. At 1080p the machine is comfortable: Cyberpunk 2077 at High without ray tracing averaged 80fps, Forza Horizon 6 at High 69fps and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle at Medium 77fps. At 4K the story changes: Cyberpunk needed FSR Performance to reach 38fps (61fps with frame generation), Forza managed 37fps at High and Indiana Jones 20fps at Medium. Ray tracing was described as largely not viable. The single 120mm fan stayed under 35dB with the CPU below 70°C and the GPU at 75°C. The reviewer praised the “fantastic hardware design” and the TV-friendly SteamOS interface, but concluded that advertised 4K gaming “often doesn’t deliver” and that the price is too high. Titles with kernel-level anti-cheat, including Fortnite, Apex Legends and Rainbow Six Siege, do not run.

Steam Frame followed. On 14 September 2026 Valve published prices of $1,059 for the 256GB headset and $1,299 for 1TB, both with 16GB of RAM and microSD expansion, built around a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 2160 by 2160 LCD panels per eye at 72 to 144Hz, Wi-Fi 7 and a wireless PC streaming adapter in the box. Half-Life: Alyx is included. Reservations again used a randomised list, with first purchase emails expected on 18 September. The headset ships without a power supply; a 45W USB-C charger is sold separately for $29.

What it means for buyers

The Steam Machine is a niche product at this price, and the reservation system means there is no conventional distributor allocation at launch. Buyers in the Gulf and Central Asia, which are outside the launch regions, should expect grey-channel supply only, with a one-year Valve warranty serviced in the purchase region rather than locally. On the shelf it competes with handheld-and-dock setups and with the Xbox Series X at $799.99 rather than with the PS5. If you do stock it, the 512GB model with a controller is the sensible single SKU; the 2TB premium is hard to justify when the SSD is user-replaceable. Treat Steam Frame as a 2027 line for export markets until Valve extends the shipping list.
